A lot of people ask me this. Texas Dept. of Agriculture Structural Pest Control Service has advertising requirements in their laws and regulations for pest control companies. Certain keywords cannot be used when advertising or making claims to customers about treatments.
A lot of the "green or eco" companies unfortunately do this sort of advertising and making claims. Allison Cuellar with TDA stated one time at a CEU class, as far as TDA is concerned, someone can drown or aspirate with just plain water, so these companies are not exempt from advertising laws and regulations.
Also I learned since my years in this industry, that some people and pets are sensitive to certain essential oils and natural pesticides, which can pose medical problems and sometimes death. Pyrethrin is natural and found in a lot of pesticides, and also very toxic to cats. Something I look at when people have pets, I read my labels on the products I use. Shocked me, because it's used in a lot of flea products, so read your labels when searching for flea products or prevention for your cats. There are a few awesome flea treatment products on the professional market for licensed companies to use for flea control that don't have any pyrethrin, they work great, but are also extremely expensive, which makes some companies shy away for because of the cost.
As for pets and children during treatments, most pesticide labels state pets and children need to be out of the treatment area, UNTIL DRY. Label is law in the pest control industry. In some cases , if you can't get them out of the house or building during treatment, I always recommend skipping an area of the building for pets and children to stay in until the treatment is dry. Crating pets during treatment is another option, so they are not roaming around the building.
Some treatments, like for fleas or bed bugs, pets and children and adults too, need to vacate the premises during treatment. The tech or myself will give you a timeframe in hours of when it is safe to return, you always want to air out the structure as well because aerosols and dusts could be used. There will be a prep sheet for those services, even explaining what to do about fish tanks, birds, and reptiles that can't leave with you.
